Laser Hair Removal in Fairfield County

Serving Patients in Stratford and Norwalk, CT

The majority of men and women can agree that removing unwanted hair is a tedious and thankless task. Regular shaving, tweezing and waxing is cumbersome, inconvenient and (depending on the method) costly. Laser hair removal is one of the best advances in modern cosmetic technology, as it permanently and non-invasively removes unwanted hair from the face and body, making razors and wax strips practically obsolete!

We offer laser hair removal at the Norwalk and Stratford locations of SkinCare Physicians of Fairfield County. We use top-of-the-line lasers that are safe and effective. If you are interested in learning more about this treatment, please contact us for an appointment. Call our Norwalk location at 203-847-2400 or our Stratford location at 203-375-8200 to speak to a friendly member of our team.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Laser hair removal involves using a low-energy laser beam to damage and disable the hair follicles (where hair growth originates). The hand-piece emits the laser beam, which penetrates the skin and is attracted to the pigment of the hair.

Hair grows in different cycles; follicles that are in the active growth stage absorb the laser energy, but follicles that are in the dormant stage are unaffected by treatment. Therefore, several treatment sessions are usually necessary to achieve the desired results.

Individuals with light skin and dark, coarse hair usually see the best results from laser hair removal, because the laser is able to clearly differentiate the contrast between the skin and hair follicle. Therefore, we recommend that you avoid tanning if you are planning a laser hair removal session. Winter is a great time to undergo treatment! However, please note that our lasers can be used on a variety of skin types; please speak with us if you have concerns about your results.

Treatment Areas

Laser hair removal can be used on the following areas of the body:

What Can I Expect During a Laser Hair Removal Session?

To prepare for laser hair removal: Avoid tanning beds, prolonged sun exposure, waxing, chemical peels and collagen injections for approximately two weeks prior to your session. Also, avoid wearing any lotions, deodorants, perfumes or other potential irritants to your treatment session (you will also need to refrain from applying these products right after treatment). Avoid taking aspirin, anti-inflammatory medications and herbal supplements immediately before treatment.

The treatment session: You will be given special goggles to protect your eyes from the laser beam. Our aesthetician may also apply a topical anesthetic to the treatment area to reduce potential discomfort. She will press the laser hand-piece to your skin; it may have a cooling tip to protect your skin from overheating. She will pass the hand-piece over the treatment area. Small treatment areas (e.g., areas of the face) will take a few minutes; larger treatment areas (e.g., the legs or back) will take longer.

After the treatment session: You may have minor redness or swelling immediately following your treatment session, but these side effects are only temporary. You should not need any significant downtime after treatment. It’s best to avoid sun exposure for approximately one week after treatment. If you are going to be in the sun, apply sunscreen to protect the treatment area.
